If you live in the northern part of Nigeria, you're more likely to be familiar with “fura da nono”. It is a well-known African gruel made and consumed mostly by Northerners. In English, Fura de nunu translates as "milk" and "millet gruel".

The Hausas refer to it as Fura da Nono, but the bulk of Nigerians refer to it as Fura de Nunu. It's a nutritious and filling meal.

Nono or Nunu is a thick lumpy local yoghurt made from the fermentation of cow milk.

Nono is made from fermented milk after the fatty component known as Man shanu is separated from the milk (Cow oil).

The craft of nono manufacturing is one of Fulani's numerous distinctive traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Without them, the history of fura de nunu would be incomplete.

Most young Fulani females make a living selling fura balls from calabashes, and they sell can go from place to place in the heat of the day.

Nutritional value of Fura de nunu

    1. Fura is a nutritious Nigerian meal prepared from millet, a gluten-free grain rich in minerals and vitamins.
    2. Millet is also an ecological meal since it serves as a probiotic, feeding essential microflora in our internal ecology.
    3. Magnesium, calcium, manganese, tryptophan, phosphorus, fibre, B vitamins, and antioxidants are all found in the millet grain from which Fura is formed.
    4. Vitamin B 5 and Vitamin B 12 are among the vitamins and minerals included in Fura's nono yoghurt component, as are potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, iodine, and zinc, all of which promote key physiological processes in the body.

The most important health benefits of Fura Da Nono explained!

    1. Fura Da Nono Reduces The Chances of Having a Heart Attack

Another advantage of consuming Fura da nono is that it reduces the chance of heart attacks.

This is due to the fact that it contains magnesium, which has been shown to decrease blood pressure and hence reduce the risk of a heart attack.

The presence of Vitamin B3 lowers harmful cholesterol levels, cutting the risk of a heart attack even further. Millet is thus considered a heart-healthy food.

    2. Assists in Fat Metabolism

Fura da nono contains phosphorus, which aids fat metabolism. The fat (lipids) is broken down into smaller components that are needed to supply energy to the body's cells.

The breakdown of fat is difficult, but the presence of phosphorus facilitates the process.

    3. Cholesterol Levels Are Reduced

Fura is high in Vitamin B3, which helps the body lower harmful cholesterol (LDL). Many heart-related problems have been linked to high levels of bad cholesterol. Unfortunately, many of the products we use just serve to increase it.

Fura, on the other hand, has vitamin B3, which helps to decrease bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol (HDL), which is essential for the body.

    4. Keeps Your Bones Healthy and Strong

In fura da nono, both the millet and the milk are high in calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth.

It also includes phosphorus and vitamin D, both of which are essential for bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis.

    5. Assists with digestion and helps to prevent constipation

Fibre is abundant in fura da nono, which promotes digestion. It does this by facilitating bowel movement and enabling meals to be adequately digested.

Constipation and inconsistent bowel movements are also avoided.

Take away on Benefits of Fura Da Nono

But it's not only the flavour of fura da nono that makes it so good; it's also how healthful it is. Because there is no processing, the nutrients in the millet and milk are abundant.

Millet is an extremely nutritious grain that is high in minerals like calcium, manganese, fibre, phosphorus, and many more, as well as vitamins.

Nono is obtained from grass-fed cows, and as a result, the milk is high in nutrients.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, protein, and selenium are all abundant in fresh cow milk. Fresh milk is also high in omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid.

If you've never had fura da nono, you're losing out on all of the sweetness and health advantages this delicious gruel has to offer.
