    Dostinex: Uses

    Dostinex is typically used to treat the symptoms of high level of prolactin, such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, decreased libido and galactorrhea. It can also be used to reduce the size of certain pituitary tumors.

    Dostinex is available as a tablet or an oral suspension.

    Dostinex: Potential Side Effects

    Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. These side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.

    The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

    Mild Side Effects

    • Unusual strong urges (such as increased gambling, increased libido),

    • Swelling ankles/feet,

    Dostinex: Precautions

    Before taking Dostinex, let your doctor know your medical history such as; heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, or a history of mental illness.

    Also, it is important you inform your doctor if you are allergic to Dostinex or if you have any other allergies, as this medication may contain an active ingredient which can cause allergic reaction or some other issues.

    A common symptoms when using this medication is dizziness. Taking alcohol or marijuana can make you more dizzy. It is important not to not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages and talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana before taking this medication.

    During pregnancy, Dostinex should be used only if prescribed. It is not yet known if this drug passes into breast milk when used at recommended doses, but this medication may affect breast milk production. Breast-feeding while using this medication isn't recommended. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

    Dostinex: Interaction

    Dostinex may interact with other drugs and may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects, so it is important to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. 

    Some drugs that may interact with Dostinex include;

    • Heart rhythm medications such as quinidine or procainamide
    • Blood pressure medications such as alpha blockers or beta blockers
    • Anticholinergics such as benztropine or trihexyphenidyl

    Taking Dostinex with these drugs may cause serious side effects. Therefore, it is important to talk to your doctor about all potential drug interactions before taking this medication.

    Dostinex: Recommended Dosage

    The recommended dose of Dostinex is 0.5 mg twice weekly. Dostinex may be administered orally to the mouth with or without food. If gastrointestinal upset occurs, taking dostinex with food may lessen this effect. 

    Do not take more or less of this medication than prescribed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment (prolactin levels). Your doctor will start with you at a low dose and slowly increase your dose over several months to help decrease side effects. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

    Dostinex: Storage

    Dostinex tablets should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store this medication in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

    Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

    Who Should Not Take This Medication?

    There are certain people who should not take Dostinex, and these people include:

    -Those who are allergic to the active ingredient, cabergoline, or any of the other ingredients in the medication.

    -Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    -People with liver or kidney problems.

    -People with a history of heart problems.
