Healthcare is the best it has ever been. Despite significant milestones in modern medicine, one issue persists – poor data quality in patient records. Hospitals and medical professionals need patient records to provide accurate and timely care.

However, the lack of data quality in patient records creates bottlenecks, leads to poor policy-making, and impedes critical medical research. Ultimately this leads to everyone in the system suffering. Therefore, high data quality is crucial for an efficient and successful healthcare system.

    Healthcare Data Quality Overview

Technology and data have improved healthcare over the years by a significant amount. Our hospitals and healthcare systems need to maintain and have access to high-quality patient data to provide the best service they can.

That is why the level of data quality in patient records is very important. Hospitals and healthcare professionals use data for many purposes. This data is used for the following:

    Advertise here
    • Maintaining patient records (EHS)
    • Researching new diseases
    • Analysis of new diseases and patient's histories
    • Maintaining patient records
    • Diagnosing diseases
    • Providing timely and accurate care
    • Designing effective medical processes, policies, and more

Our hospitals need better data quality to provide the best healthcare services.

Why High Data Quality is Mission Critical for Good Healthcare

With high-quality medical data and patient records, hospitals and healthcare systems can provide patients with the best possible care.

It also strengthens and optimizes the overall healthcare infrastructure. Here are some massive benefits of high-quality data in healthcare:

    Reliable Healthcare Records

All patients have medical records, disease history, social state, and mental health, all stored in an electronic healthcare database called the EHS. High-quality and reliable data in patient EHS records allow medical professionals to provide effective and adequate medical care to everybody.

However, the current EHS records are far from optimal. Issues like data duplication plague the current system. Duplication stops doctors from getting a holistic view of the patient’s medical history, which can lead to improper care unintentionally.

Good data quality allows doctors and even patients to rely on the system. Medical professionals can then provide accurate care to each patient based on their specific medical conditions, needs, and history.

    Accurate Diagnosis of Diseases

The difference between life and death could be minutes or even seconds. Doctors use an enormous amount of data to diagnose issues and provide adequate care the patient needs.

Therefore, if the data quality of each patient is accurate and reliable, doctors can diagnose and provide life-saving treatment promptly. Moreover, the treatment and diagnosis will be reliable as well.

Since doctors use information from different sources like nurse notes, patient history notes, EHS records, vital records, and more, quality data, like a global clinical trial database, will help doctors be more effective.

    Increased Trust

Unfortunately, many patients do not trust the current medical infrastructure. Ensuring high-quality medical data automatically results in better and more accurate healthcare.

As a result, the system’s users will develop trust in our medical infrastructure and healthcare professionals. Patient trust leads to higher loyalty as well.

    Effective Policy Making

Better data quality helps healthcare professionals to make policies and procedures more effective. The policies and procedures are made by studying past data and activities.

If the data records are accurate, it will help industry experts make efficient procedures and policies, ultimately benefiting everyone.

    Better Medical Research and Analytics

Without effective research and data analytics, innovation in the medical sector, clinical trials, and testing of new medicines become very difficult. Therefore, high-quality data gives researchers confidence and a better, more in-depth understanding of what is happening.

New ways of treating ailments are being discovered all the time. For example, treating common conditions with CBD. Doctors and researchers can study high-quality data to help research new diseases, treatments, perform clinical trials, and test medicines.

HL7 Messaging Becomes Much More Reliable

Already, systems dictate how hospitals store patient records and medical data. HL7, which stands for Health Level 7, standardizes and instructs on data collection and processing.

The standard also provides guidelines on how different hospitals and medical bodies share patients' medical data. But despite these standards, healthcare organizations face challenges due to poor data quality.

High-quality medical data will make it much easier for medical organizations and doctors to work efficiently and comply with HL7 standards even better.

    Increased Operational Efficiency

The more efficient healthcare professionals and the total systems work, the more lives can be saved. It is as simple as that. However, achieving said operational efficiency by compromising healthcare quality is out of the question.

This is where high-quality data can help tremendously. Healthcare professionals often need to clean and sort the data themselves before it can be used in any capacity.

This creates bottlenecks in their routine tasks. The more time doctors and nurses spend on the records and polishing data, the less time they spend on their patients. Therefore, high-quality data across the board helps them be much more efficient.

    Increased Compliance

High-quality medical data and records make it easier for hospitals, healthcare professionals, and organizations to comply with standards such as HIPAA. Better compliance means fewer chances of lawsuits.

Organizations have responsibilities. They are accountable for transparency, accuracy, security, and more. For example, even if they want to store your medical records they need to use a HIPAA medical record storage facility, that has the credentials and experience to do so.

The higher the data quality, the better healthcare professionals can carry out their responsibilities while being compliant with laws.

Major Issues That Stem from Poor Data Quality

Poor medical data quality not only causes issues for doctors but also negatively impacts patients. Here are some common problems not having good data for medical records can cause:

    • Delays in treatments
    • Low efficiency
    • Ineffective policymaking
    • General distrust in the system
    • Frustrations and mistreatment

These problems have been seen repeatedly in organizations that fail to maintain quality data of their patient records. Since our modern healthcare system relies on medical data, good-quality medical data ultimately helps everyone involved.

    Wrapping Up

The importance of quality data in patient medical records is paramount. Ensuring this can solve many issues. Moreover, it will help patients receive better care and experience. Trust in the whole system also increases.

Moreover, doctors and all healthcare professionals will be more efficient and comply with the law. They will also be able to provide the highest quality healthcare service.
