You might be wondering how the health of your mouth matters so much. Well, what if we told you that your oral health is a strong indicator of your overall health? Let’s discuss why this is the case.

How Does Your Oral Health Impact Your Overall Health?

There is a close link between your overall health and your oral health, including both your physical and mental health. Studies confirm the association between the bacteria in your mouth (your oral microbiome) and your risk of disease.

The beneficial bacteria in your mouth are responsible for reducing plaque build-up and they are the first line of defense to fight off potentially harmful bacteria. Regular brushing and flossing ensure that any ‘bad’ bacteria in your mouth are washed away so the ‘good’ bacteria can thrive.

A Great Oral Hygiene Routine Prevents Disease

Following a thorough oral hygiene routine reduces the risk of gum disease and oral infections. Disease and infection of the mouth can cause tooth decay and tooth loss, and can lead to further health complications that impact the rest of your body.

Poor oral health is linked to an increased risk of:

    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Diabetes
    • Osteoporosis
    • HIV/AIDs
    • Pregnancy complications
    • Pneumonia
    • Alzheimer’s disease

Although further studies are required to confirm the reasons why poor oral health increases your risk of the above diseases, there are a few current hypotheses. Many researchers believe that the inflammation caused in the mouth by a lack of oral hygiene can increase systemic inflammation (that is, inflammation throughout the whole body).

How Can You Improve and Maintain Great Oral Health?

Luckily, maintaining great oral hygiene is relatively simple and easy. You probably already know the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day but there’s lots of other things that you can add to your oral hygiene routine to achieve a healthier smile, and great mouth and gum health.

Visiting your dentist regularly, whether you head to a Cosmetic Dentist in Chandler, AZ, or a local practice in your area, is essential. A qualified dentist can assess your teeth, gums, and tongue to check whether there are any concerning issues that you need to address. They can also offer their expert advice and guidance on how you can keep your mouth bugs happy and boost your oral hygiene.

Additional daily oral hygiene steps [mfn]https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/dental/art-20047475[/mfn] include:

    1. Brushing your gums and tongue, as well as your teeth
    2. Flossing once a day after brushing your teeth, either in the morning or evening
    3. Using mouthwash after brushing your teeth
    4. Switching to a fluoride-containing toothpaste
    5. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush that doesn’t hurt your gums
    6. Avoiding sugary foods and drinks
    7. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol
