The gums may bleed due to tooth brushing and this is such a common observation, that some people mistakenly take to be normal. In cases where gum bleeding occurs more often and becomes noticeable then there must be a Problem. The gums could bleed on any slight touch with a sharp instrument.

    GUM BLEEDING CAUSES

For the gum to bleed implies there is inflammation. Inflammation of the gum is characterized by pain, swelling, redness, and bleeding. This condition if left untreated will gradually progress to periodontitis (destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth).

The causes of gum bleeding include :

    • Poor oral hygiene.
    • Improper tooth brushing.
    • Lack of function of the teeth.
    • Malalignment and crowding of the teeth.
    • Bacterial plaque as the primary agent.

Age: As you age, gum diseases may likely increases over 50% by age 30 years and above. Similarly, at age 65 and above it may increase to 70%.

Stress: Stress can cause so many serious health issues and linked to many conditions, including periodontal disease. According to a small study, stress can make things harder for your body to fight infection, such as periodontal abscess, a dental abscess.

Medications: Some drugs can also increase your risk of getting gum diseases such as prescription such as anti-depressants, certain heart medications, and oral contraceptives. Check with your doctor or dentist to learn if your prescription medication can affect your gums.

Genetics: Majority of us are just prone to get gum disease. If you think you are prone to gum disease, your dentist can perform a simple genetic test to determine your risk.

WHAT ARE THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF GUM BLEEDING?

Prevention involves adherence to oral hygiene instructions which help to prevent gum bleeding. If you want to maintain good oral hygiene, you are advised:

    • Visit a dental clinic where all the causes of gum bleeding such as microbial plaque, calculus, food debris, etc, are removed by the therapist.
    • Use warm salt water once the bacterial plaque, food debris, calculus, etc are removed by your dental therapist and possibly prescribe vitamin C tablets and plenty of fruits. Other oral hygiene instructions have been discussed.

Treatment of gum bleeding depends on the causes. For those which arise from systemic diseases such as puberty, menopause, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, and blood disorder refer to the appropriate doctor.
