5 Helpful Tips To Prepare For Your Dental Implant Procedure

A dental implant surgery refers to a procedure where the tooth’s roots are replaced with metal, screw-like posts to replace damaged or missing teeth. An artificial tooth that looks much like the real one is put in place of the old, damaged ones. Dentists usually recommend implants to be done when you need an alternative to dentures or bridgework.

As simple as the procedure may sound, it’s worth noting that a dental implant is still a serious surgery or procedure. To ensure a higher likelihood of its success, preparation is key. When you discuss dental implants Perth with your dentist, you’ll be given pointers regarding what you should know to increase its chances of success and have a better recovery.

With that said, here's a list of helpful tips we compiled with help from a dentist in Murray Hill to get you prepared for the procedure.

    1. Understand Why A Dental Implant Procedure Has To Be Done

Before anything else, you have to beef up on as much information as you can about dental implants. When your trusted dentist presents you with this idea, ask questions about the procedure. This is important to have a good grip on how and why dental implants are called for.

To give you answers, dental implants are right for you if:

    • You have one or more missing teeth
    • You don’t smoke tobacco
    • Your jawbone has reached its full growth
    • You’re able and willing to commit several months for completing the dental implant process
    • You have healthy oral tissues

    2. Go Through A Comprehensive Dental Examination

No qualified or reputable dentist will ever let you through a dental implant procedure without first having a comprehensive dental examination. This is important so your dentist has all the information needed to come up with a good treatment plan for your case.

The comprehensive dental examination should include processes like:

    • Going through the patient’s medical history and records, taking an x-ray, and doing a visual exam of the mouth, teeth, and gums
    • Assess whether the patient is immunocompromised or not, with the former calling for the need of antibiotics before and after each dental implant surgery
    • Study if the patient’s jaws need to be prepared by performing bone grafts and jaw reshaping

    3. Stock Up On Plenty Of Soft Food And Drinks

For a few days to weeks after your dental implant surgery, you may not be able to eat as you normally do. This means you have to take it easy on yourself. Going on a grocery run may be the last thing on your mind, so stock up on plenty of soft food and drinks. If you have the time for it before your surgery, you can also meal prep so you have ready-made soup and soft dishes in your fridge. All you have to do is reheat those homecooked meals.

    4. Ask About The Possible Risks

Another thing a reputable and honest dentist will do is be transparent about the possible risks and side effects of dental implant surgery. You have to understand that any surgery has its underlying risks. But doctors and dentists who recommend you to undergo surgery will help you understand that the benefits far outweigh the risks.

It's still a must to discuss the risks so you understand what to expect. This will make it easier for you to have a self-assessment on when you have to call your dentist for any possible discomforts you may be feeling after your dental implant surgery.

The risks that may arise from a dental implant procedure are usually minor. These include:

    • Sinus problems, which can happen when the dental implants placed on the upper jaw protrude into your sinus cavities
    • Infection at the implant site
    • Nerve damage, which is characterized by numbness or a tingling sensation in your natural teeth

    5. Prepare Your Body For The Surgery

Like any surgical procedure, you also have to prepare your body for the surgery itself. A dental implant procedure is an oral surgery under general anesthesia. This means you have to fast at least twelve hours before the surgery. Your dentist may also recommend you to arrive in loose, comfortable clothing.

    Conclusion

There are several things you need to do to help you prepare for your dental implant. Because it’s a surgical procedure, it’s normal to feel intimidated by the idea of it. But like any other procedure, preparation is key for a good recovery. Note that being a candidate for dental implant surgery isn’t a rare thing. Many dental patients have had it before; and now, you’re next in line. When your dentist has recommended for you to have one, you can trust that this is for your benefit.
