7 BODILY SIGNS THAT REFLECT VITAMIN DEFICIENCY

    By Isreal Olabanji DST RNUpdated:July 4, 2024

Our body performs a variety of functions round the clock. From chemical messengers’ formation to producing skin, muscles, and tissues, the human body tends to do a host of things. That is where vitamins surface on the scene.

The human body houses numerous vitamins that have dedicated tasks to perform. They are necessary for our body’s essential functions like; growth, metabolism, immunity, and energy for doing work. These vitamins are 17 in number. The list includes vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, and their derivatives. Having the right diet is necessary for a healthy day.

Vitamins are also necessary for the conversion of food into energy. But, what happens when you lack the required amount of vitamins in your body?

Vitamin deficiency can cause a wide range of acute and chronic diseases. You can easily recognize these conditions with the help of some universal bodily signs. We are listing the most common physical symptoms stimulated by vitamin deficiency:

     1. HAIR DAMAGE AND HAIR LOSS

Damaged hair and hair loss are the most common signs of vitamin deficiency. In light of many comprehensive studies, around 50% of the adult population loses hair before 50 due to vitamin deficiency. This problem occurs due to the shortage of some significant vitamins like Linoleic Acid (LA), Alpha-Linoleic, Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B7 (Biotin).

Though the most efficient solution is to have a diet full of the above vitamins, you may also consider consuming supplements. Many pharmaceutical companies are producing newer vitamins because of the growing concerns of vitamin deficiency in infants, teens, and, most importantly, older people. You can explore the national and international market to ensure a safe intake of hair care medicines. Like people in Germany prefer USANA vitamins and other health care essential supplements due to authenticity and affordability.

Niacin’s good sources include dairy products, grains, nuts, leafy green vegetables, fish, and meat. Vegetable oils, egg yolk, whole grains, walnuts, and chia seeds are rich in Biotin and Linoleic Acid (LA).

      2. BRITTLENESS OF NAILS

This problem of frequent brittleness in nails is due to Vitamin 87 (Biotin). This rare deficiency is damaging to hair and nails. It triggers signs such as; dryness of hair, thinning and weakness in hair, dryness of nails, and nails’ breaking. Biotin deficiency may cause rare symptoms like acute and chronic fatigue, frequent muscle pain, etc.; taking the right diet can tackle Biotin deficiency. While overcoming this issue, some primary foods are dairy products, spinach, meat, egg yolk, fish, vegetable oils, sweet potatoes, bananas, and whole grains.

      3. GUM BLEEDING AND SWELLING

Frequent bleeding of gums while brushing can be due to the deficiency of Vitamin C. It is responsible for cell healing, skin healing, wound healing, immunity. It also tackles damage to cells in our body. Its deficiency can cause wounds to heal slowly and bleeding in gums and around nails; despite being easily accessible, as many as up to 30 percent of people lack Vitamin C.

Fruits and vegetables are a great source of Vitamin C. Taking 2 to 4 pieces of fresh fruits like orange and vegetable can tackle Vitamin C deficiency.

      4. DECLINING NIGHT VISION

This sign of vitamin deficiency is arguably the worst of all. The reason being, it affects your eyes and vision. It is majorly due to the high deficit of Vitamin A. This problem can also occur due to a low-nutrient diet and weakness. The chronic effect of this deficiency may cause life-time night blindness. Try to have fish, the meat of organs, dairy products, eggs, leafy vegetables, and oranges to overcome Vitamin A deficiency.

      5. HAIR DANDRUFF AND DRY SCALP PROBLEMS

The development of dry scalp skin and dandruff problems can be due to many reasons. It includes a low level of Zinc in the blood, and a deficiency of Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), and Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine). Itchy dry skin is one of the common signs of this deficiency. The dilemma could affect body parts responsible for the body’s oil production, making the body dry and itchy. Sources of Vitamin B2, B3, and B6 are meat, eggs, leafy green vegetables, seeds, dairy products, and nuts.

      6. RED-WHITE SKIN BUMPS

This condition of getting red or white-colored little bumps on the skin is called Keratosis Pilaris. Its signs include spots on arms, cheeks, bottoms, thigh skin, and neck. Keratosis Pilaris occurs due to a high deficiency of Vitamin A and C; this health condition may also occur due to genetic transfer from parents or grandparents.

Foods with a high content of Vitamin A and C call for an intake regularly in case of the above deficiency signs. Some common foods in this regard are dark-green vegetables, meats, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables.

      7. RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME (RLS)

This syndrome is also named Willis-Ekbom Syndrome. In this syndrome, nerves cause blood blockage and uncomfortable conditions in the legs. This condition’s exact cause is not apparent. However, some experts cite the lack of vitamin C and B as the prominent reason behind it.

    CONCLUSION

Vitamin deficiency is one of the significant health problems of the modern world. Taking food that lacks vitamins causes a wide range of issues. These problems may include acute headaches to chronic diseases like bone weakness. The most efficient and natural mitigation measure is to take the right diet. In case of any sign, take foods that overcome the efficiency of that specific vitamin.
