There has been a significant increase in demand for healthcare professionals. As we advance into 2023, this demand continues to grow, driven by an increased prevalence of chronic illnesses, and the need for preventative healthcare. Given that, several healthcare degrees are expected to become more relevant in the coming years. Careers in healthcare are fulfilling as they provide individuals with the opportunity to impact the lives of others by helping to prevent and treat illnesses, manage chronic conditions, and improve the well-being of patients.

Here are some of the most in-demand degrees in healthcare in 2023.

    Nursing

Nursing is one of the most rewarding healthcare careers, involving working closely with patients, providing compassionate care, managing symptoms, and helping patients navigate complex healthcare systems. Most nurses are involved in healthcare education and advocacy, helping patients and their families understand their healthcare options and navigate the healthcare system. They promote public health and disease prevention through education and outreach.

However, some of these duties are beyond the scope of a registered nurse without advanced training. Thus, going for an advanced degree like a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) can prove beneficial in their career. An RN to BSN program is designed for registered nurses (RNs) holding an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN). A Nursing Diploma holder can earn a BSN degree as well.

Nurses can finish their degree requirements and broaden their employment opportunities in healthcare sectors in only 12 months. Fortunately, some affordable online RN to BSN programs are available for individuals interested in pursuing their education while working. You have the opportunity to advance your career through this program and get ready for senior nursing positions.

    Physical Therapy

A physical therapist works with patients of all ages with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, or cardiopulmonary conditions. They assist patients in improving their mobility, reducing pain, and achieving their functional goals through exercises. Physical therapists use a variety of therapeutic interventions, including exercise, manual therapy, and modalities such as heat, ice, and electrical stimulation, to help patients recover and regain their independence.

To become a physical therapist, individuals should complete a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program. This program typically takes three years to complete and includes classroom instruction and clinical rotations. After completing their DPT degree, individuals must pass a licensing exam to practice as physical therapists.

    Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is another healthcare degree expected to be in high demand in 2023. Occupational therapists work with patients' physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges and help them develop or regain the skills necessary for daily living and work activities. They evaluate the patient's abilities and limitations, identify their goals, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Furthermore, they work with patients on activities, from simple tasks like buttoning a shirt to more complex tasks like cooking or driving.

To become an occupational therapist, individuals typically need to complete a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy (OT). Students must complete a rigorous educational program that covers topics related to human anatomy, psychology, and the skills and techniques used in occupational therapy practice. Some key areas of study in occupational therapy include human anatomy and physiology, psychology and human development, therapeutic techniques, assistive technology, and clinical practice.

    Health Information Management

As healthcare is now reliant on technology and electronic health records (EHRs), the need for HIM professionals who can manage and interpret that data is growing. Health Information Management (HIM) is a field focused on collecting, analyzing, and managing healthcare data. HIM specialists are in charge of coordinating the exchange of information between healthcare providers and ensuring that the patient data is accurate and secure. They also work to ensure that patient information is used in compliance with regulations and ethical guidelines.

HIM professionals require at least a bachelor's degree in health information management. This field offers a wide range of career opportunities, from entry-level positions of medical coders and data analysts to management and leadership roles such as HIM directors and chief information officers. With the increasing use of electronic health records and the need for data-driven healthcare, the demand for HIM professionals is expected to grow in the coming years.

    Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Science involves the analysis of patient samples, such as blood, urine, and tissue, to diagnose and monitor medical conditions. These test results are essential for diagnosing and monitoring medical conditions. Professionals in this field use advanced equipment and technology to perform complex tests that help physicians and other healthcare professionals make informed decisions about patient care. They are also responsible for ensuring the accuracy and quality of laboratory results and communicating those results to healthcare providers.

MLS professionals require a bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science. They also have the opportunity to specialize in microbiology, hematology, and immunology and work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, and public health agencies.

    Pharmacy

Pharmacists play a critical role in dispensing medications to patients and ensuring they are safely and effectively used to treat medical conditions. A pharmacy degree holder can provide patients with information about their medications, including potential side effects, drug interactions, and dosing instructions. They can also work with patients to develop personalized medication management plans.

These medication experts work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Additionally, the field of pharmacy offers a wide range of career opportunities, including positions in patient care, drug development, research, and administration.

    Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy focuses on assisting patients with breathing problems. Therapists in these fields evaluate and treat patients with conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, pneumonia, and respiratory distress syndrome. They use various techniques, including oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, chest physiotherapy, and aerosol medications, to improve patients' breathing functions.

Respiratory Therapists require a Bachelor of Health Science in Respiratory Care or an Associate’s degree in Respiratory Care. They may also specialize in neonatal or pediatric respiratory care, critical care, or sleep disorders. Their salaries may vary depending on the location, experience, and specialization, but the median annual wage for respiratory therapists in the United States 1https://www.salary.com/research/salary/benchmark/registered-respiratory-therapist-salary is around $74,000.

    Conclusion

The healthcare industry is experiencing significant growth and transformation, driven by factors such as advances in medical technology, and changes in healthcare policy. As a result, there is a growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals who can provide high-quality patient care, manage healthcare data and technology, and lead healthcare organizations. We hope the above-mentioned degrees can help you decide on the field of your choice in 2023 and beyond.
