WELLNESS HEALTH - Debunking 5 Common Myths About Dairy Foods

Debunking 5 Common Myths About Dairy Foods

Who doesn't love a glass of cold milk with a freshly-baked cookie? That's a treat that most of us can relate to, right? However, many people pass on the pleasures of cold milk and dairy products because of some common myths.

Let's examine five of the most common myths about dairy:

Dairy Products are Hard to Digest

While it is true that some individuals are lactose-intolerant and must limit their intake of milk, cheese, and other dairy products, there is new evidence to show that even those people can benefit from wise consumption of dairy:

    • Try drinking milk with a meal to promote digestion.
    • Consume smaller amounts of dairy, and gauge your body's reaction.

The lactase enzyme breaks down the lactose in dairy products, which is reduced in the body as people age. Drinking one eight-ounce cup of milk daily usually causes problems, but those particularly sensitive to lactose can choose from various lactose-free dairy products on the market today.

Fat in Dairy Products Contributes to Cardiovascular Disease

A Swedish study that followed 4,150 individuals over 16 years found that the fat contained in dairy products may actually protect against heart disease and stroke. Another body of research has found that consuming dairy fat lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes. Limiting your intake of high-calorie ice cream and cheeses may be wise, but there is little reason to eliminate most dairy products from one's diet or to consume low-fat versions. Interestingly, the difference between a glass of whole milk and the same-size glass of 2% milk is only eight calories.

    Milk Hormones Cause Early Puberty

There is no evidence, according to experts, for this claim. Even though girls and boys today seem to mature earlier than in past generations, the cause is likely better overall nutrition than dairy consumption. The claim that today's milk is "tainted" by the hormones dairy farmers use to increase milk production in their animals has been refuted. The body's digestive process neutralizes naturally-occurring hormones in all varieties of food. So continue to offer your kids a glass of cold milk – with or without the cookies.

Dairy Products are a Leading Cause of Obesity

Milk, cheese, yogurt, and even ice cream consumed as part of a healthy, balanced diet will not cause you to either gain or lose weight. Yes, some people incorrectly believe that eating more dairy can help you shed pounds. That is also a myth. Dairy products have not conclusively been deemed to contribute to inflammation in the body, nor are they a panacea for other medical conditions. Milk, however, is as effective as an energy drink in helping athletes recover from a strenuous workout.

Organic Milk is Healthier than Non-Organic Milk

Finally, no studies have confirmed that organically produced milk and dairy products are inherently healthier than their non-organic counterparts. Nutritionally, there is no difference; the difference is in perception, and it's an individual choice.

The bottom line is that milk and dairy products are good for you. And what better way to consume dairy than by your local farm? The Modern Milkman is committed to bringing the highest quality, locally-produced milk, cheese, dairy products, baked goods, and other locally-produced food products directly to your home, just like the good old days.
