Dental restorations come under public scrutiny time and again to ensure that people receive dental treatments that are beneficial and not harmful. The fact that many dental treatments prove to be doing more harm than good is not unknown. In some instances, the true advantages and disadvantages of treatment become fully known only after years of its development.

When it comes to your dental health, you would not want to undergo any treatment procedure that aggravates your problems or causes side-effects. Millions of patients opt forporcelain crownsas a dental restoration to be placed in their mouth.

Therefore, you must know whether these crowns are worth your consideration or not. Before you start thinking less of us, we must tell you that we certainly don’t want that you to face the requirement of dental restoration. But as a proactive and smart person, you must gather the necessary knowledge about various dental treatments. Porcelain crown treatment, which is considered to be an aesthetic dentistry procedure, is an ideal option in numerous scenarios.

We have mentioned some information about porcelain crowns in this article. We hope that you will find it useful, and if you do, please let us know by clicking on stars at the end of the article.

What are Porcelain Crowns and What do They Do?

A porcelain crown can be called by different names, such as a ‘dental device’, ‘dental appliance’ and ‘dental restoration’. Porcelain crowns are a type of dental crowns, which are one of the dental restorations. Yes, you guessed it right! Porcelain crowns get their name from the material from which they are fabricated, i.e., porcelain.

Dental crowns are fitted as a ‘cap’ over the natural teeth to fulfil varied purposes depending on the specific needs and goals of a patient. Porcelain crowns provide both functional and aesthetic benefits to patients. As crowns cover the teeth, they can help patients get rid of cosmetic imperfections, like staining and misalignment.

Moreover, as they provide strength to the teeth, they are also used for protecting the broken or damaged teeth. Porcelain crowns are a perfect option for restoring excessively worn down and decayed teeth. Dentists even install a porcelain crown in the mouth of a patient who has undergone the root canal treatment.

Which Materials are Used for Making Dental Crowns?

Crowns are made from a variety of materials, including but not limited to, porcelain, zirconia, composite resin, gold alloy, nickel, and chromium alloy. Dental crowns are also built by combining porcelain with metal. Such crowns are known as ‘porcelain-fused-to metal crowns’ or ‘PFM crowns’.

As per the material used, crowns can be classified into different types, namely, ‘metal crowns’, ‘ceramic crowns’, and ‘PFM crowns’. All-porcelain crowns, i.e., crowns made entirely from porcelain vary from porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns in many aspects. Usually, all-resin crowns, i.e., dental crowns which are entirely made from resin are used as a temporary crown until the permanent crown is being fabricated in the dental laboratory.

What is the Process of Installing Porcelain Crowns?

Patients have to spend a few weeks of their life for conducting the journey of receiving the porcelain crown treatment. You need to visit the dental clinic or hospital for at least two times. During the first visit, if a dentist determines that a porcelain crown is necessary for resolving your dental issues, they will take the impressions of your teeth. They will also make a note of your jawbone, bite pattern, facial structure.

Then, they will send the impressions to the dental laboratory where the qualified technicians will build a crown as per your teeth’s impression, jaw movement and bite pattern. As the crown takes time to get built, the dentist will place a temporary crown over the affected tooth or teeth.

Once the permanent crown is made, it will be sent to the dentist’s office. The dentist will schedule the next appointment during which they install the permanent dental crown. The dentist might use sedation to make the patient feel comfortable during the treatment process.

Which Benefits have made Porcelain Crowns Popular?

As compared to dental crowns made from other materials, dental crowns made from porcelain offer more benefits. Hence, they have become a popular choice amongst both dental practitioners and dental patients. The lifespan of porcelain crowns is five to fifteen years on an average.

You can make the porcelain crowns last as long as possible by practising good oral hygiene habits. Porcelain crowns provide protection to the teeth on which they are placed. So, you can eliminate the risk of further damaging the teeth. Along with the treated teeth, porcelain crowns are also advantageous for the neighbouring teeth as they cause little to no friction.

    Conclusion

Dental crowns are an excellent restorative dentistry treatment procedure. On top of it, when they are made from porcelain crowns, the patients can get numerous benefits, such as durability, comfort, and safety. Porcelain crowns not only function but also look and feel like natural teeth. Thus, it can be concluded that porcelain crowns are worth your money.
