If you’re interested in becoming a nurse, you are likely already aware that there are certain requirements you need to fulfill to pursue this particular career path.

Undoubtedly, you already know that you will need to obtain a formal nursing qualification. What you may not know is that, often, further postgraduate studies are required to specialize in certain areas of nursing. You may also not be aware of the very specific skill set you need to develop to be a competent nurse.

To learn more about the specific skills and qualifications that are required to become a nurse,  just read on!

The Formal Qualifications That Are Required to Become a Registered Nurse

To become a registered nurse, there are, understandably, formal qualifications you are required to obtain. An undergraduate bachelor’s degree in nursing is an excellent place to start! Completing this will give you a solid foundation and understanding of the requirements of a career in nursing. It will also teach you the fundamental skills required to be a nurse. Despite these learnings, however, if you’re planning to pursue a career in a particular area of nursing, you may also need to complete further postgraduate studies specializing in that specific area.

To clarify, if you want to pursue a specialized career in neonatal nursing, for instance, certain neonatal nurse practitioner education requirements need to be fulfilled. These qualifications are specific and relevant to that particular career path. For nursing graduates who wish to pursue careers in other areas of nursing, such as  oncology nursing, pediatric nursing, or psychiatric and mental health nursing, for example, it will be necessary to follow a different educational pathway, and complete other specialized nursing postgraduate qualifications.

Importantly, each of these areas of specialization cover different learning outcomes and focus on the many different aspects of nursing. These are, of course, outcomes and learnings that are particular to the specific area of specialization that has been selected. For instance, an oncology nursing student may be required to learn how to administer certain medications and deliver specific treatments, which may not be relevant to other areas of nursing.

The Skills You Need to Possess to Be a Competent Nurse

If you want to become the best and most competent nurse you can be, there are  certain skills and attributes you will need to cultivate. Some of these skills include:

    Solid Teamwork Capabilities

Being able to work in a team is essential to a career in nursing. As a nurse, collaboration is a central component of your role, and you will often be required to contribute to team efforts toward patient outcomes and goals. As such, it is important to be able to take direction, and also, to give instructions where needed. You also need to be able to work collaboratively and cooperatively with your teammates.

    Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities

As a nurse, you will often be required to think on your feet! In emergencies in particular, you need to be able to keep a calm demeanor and a level head and be able to think critically in every patient scenario. In some cases, these are life and death situations, and your problem-solving abilities will be critical to help resolve issues and deliver the best possible care to your patients.

    Strong Communication Skills

To be a good nurse, you need to be able to communicate effectively. This means possessing the ability to communicate openly and transparently with your colleagues, as well as with your patients and their loved ones. Importantly, you need to be able to speak clearly and get your point across to your workmates, while also being able to show compassion and empathy when interacting with patients.

    Compassion, Care, and Empathy

Lastly, if you are passionate about becoming a nurse, you need to be able to empathize with your patients. Being a caregiver to patients is a primal element of being a nurse. As such, showing compassion when dealing with your patients and their families is essential to delivering the best possible care, and ensuring that your patients feel that they are being treated with dignity and respect.

Undoubtedly, nursing is one of the most important and rewarding career paths out there.

Importantly, though, if you’re interested in becoming a nurse, you will need to gain the formal qualifications, and develop the relevant skills to boot!

However, if you focus on these elements and stay dedicated to your career path, you can and will build a nursing career you can be proud of.
