Gestational (Pregnancy) Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a form of ' temporary diabetes ' with high blood sugar (glucose) levels in pregnant women. GDM incidence is estimated to be 2% to 4%, and this could be even higher among Indian women.

Signs of gestational diabetes include severe hunger, exhaustion/tiredness, and frequent urination, which can be easily ignored at times before a complication occurs.

All pregnant women should be tested to rule out the possibility of diabetes. Once this condition has been diagnosed, remember that the chances of developing gestational diabetes in the next pregnancy are nearly 40% and the risk of developing type II diabetes increases to 50% over the next 20 years.

    Facts about Pregnancy Diabetes:

The child born to a GDM mother is at high risk of intolerance to glucose, diabetes, and possibly obesity. The baby may be born with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or respiratory problems. Macrosomia is the most common problem associated with gestational diabetes, where the baby is born weighing more than 4 kg.

Giving birth to a heavier baby can be an issue at delivery time and is therefore recommended to undergo a cesarean delivery. One of the causes that babies die if born to mothers with gestational diabetes is congenital malformation. In gestational diabetes, ethnicity plays a major role. Women of the following ethnic groups have great chances of having gestational diabetes.

    • African Americans
    • Hispanic or Latino Americans
    • American Indians
    • South Asian

Controlling the level of blood sugar by following a proper diet or taking insulin as suggested by your gynecologist can help to overcome the complications of the fetus and mother.

    Gestational Diabetes Meal Planning

It is important to follow a healthy diet plan for a woman with Gestational (Pregnancy) Diabetes to keep her blood sugar (glucose) level under control.

    • Include small amounts of fat and protein. Some of the foods rich in protein include beef, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts
    • It is a healthier choice to take whole fruit than to drink juices
    • Your intake of carbohydrates must be less than half of your calories.
    • Eat sweets that are sugar-free.
    • Cut down the saturated fat-rich hamburger and cheese.
